Providing a clearly defined design standard to developers and contractors building new road lighting networks ensures new infrastructure is fit for purpose and meets long-term needs.

A comprehensive Infrastructure Design Standard (IDS) template has been developed to assist in ensuring all new developments deliver appropriate lighting outputs while minimising long-term operational and maintenance costs.

Implementing an IDS means that once a development is completed and inherited by a council, the new road lighting assets meet best practice performance and efficiency standards and are consistent with council policy.

Infrastructure Design Standard (IDS)
The Infrastructure Design Standard sets universal, standard specifications for new road lighting and public space installations to help ensure they deliver high quality light output while minimising electricity consumption.

By including specifications regarding appropriate performance, efficiency, waste and maintenance requirements, the IDS will help to:
• specify lighting design requirements for new infrastructure that achieve the best long-term performance and value for money through efficient design solutions;
• define requirements developers must meet for the design and installation of road lighting infrastructure in order to get council acceptance; and
• minimise ongoing operational and maintenance costs associated with new road lighting infrastructure.

The IDS document provides an example which can be used as a basis for council funded projects and privately funded developments. It includes requirements that are appropriate for smaller rural authorities as well as larger urban areas. It also contains a clear checklist to help evaluate road lighting proposals and designs. Explanations and comments on the purpose of key clauses are included together with suggestions for other elements that may be considered.
