Choosing more efficient light bulbs is one of the easiest ways to save energy and money at home – and nowadays, you don’t have worry about how they’ll look.
The design of Compact Fluorescent (CFL) and new-generation halogen bulbs has come a long way from the old spirals and sticks. Today, they’re available in a range of styles - many look just the same as the old incandescents.
We took a stylish Kiwi kitchen/dining area and replaced every bulb with a more efficient option (the whole thing took just 20 minutes).
| We replaced | With |
|---|---|
| A 40 watt table lamp bulb (no dimmer) | 8W spiral CFL |
| A 40 watt table lamp bulb (with dimmer) | 28W new-generation halogen |
| Two hanging lights over the kitchen bench (dimmable) | 20W CFL ‘warm white’ spiral bulbs |
| Six 40W candle-style bulbs in the chandelier | New generation, candle-style halogens |
| 20 recessed 12V halogen bulbs | High-efficiency IRC (Infra-Red Coated) halogen spotlights |
As well as using at least 30% less energy, the new bulbs all last a minimum of twice as long (the new hanging lights actually use 80% less energy and will last six time longer).
Over the life of the efficient bulbs those two benefits added up to a $551.61 saving in this one room alone!
If you could save that on one room – imagine what you could save by switching to energy efficiency bulbs in more rooms around your home.
