Halls, stairs, foyers and landings are circulation spaces that often have a combination of feature and general lighting. In foyers, the feeling of brightness is important to create a welcoming feeling for visitors and a feeling of security for the person answering the door. In halls, stairs and landings lighting is used for the purpose of circulation, guidance and safety.
If you leave your lighting on for long periods of time it is important to choose energy efficient, long life bulbs such as the most appropriate CFL or efficient halogen (CFL). If the lighting is switched on for short periods of time a new generation halogen bulb may also be suitable.

| Old bulb | Replacement | Comment |
| Pendant or other surface mounted ceiling or wall fitting with standard incandescent light bulb | Equivalent 'warm white' 2700K CFL (dimmable or standard) or new generation halogen bulb |
If the bulb can be seen, choose the best replacement bulb for the look you are after. Check the packaging to ensure the colour temperature and functionality meet your needs. |
| Standard incandescent floor or table lamp | 'Warm white' 2700K CFL (standard or dimmable) or new generation halogen | Be sure to select the equivalent wattage bulb (here's a guide) |
| Incandescent wall light | 'Warm white' dimmable 2700 CFL (standard or dimmable) or new generation halogen bulb |
If the wall light takes a special halogen bulb there is an energy saver option for that too |
| Incandescent step light or low level orientation light | Energy saver halogen version or small CFL step light (if replacing the fitting) |
Choose a 'warm white' colour appearance (2700K or 3000K) to match other lighting |
If you have recessed incandescent downlights in halls, stairs, foyers or landings, you firstly need to establish what type of fitting you have. Does it have a reflector in it or not? (Do not assume the lamp inside the fitting is correct).

Standard incandescent light bult in fitting with a built in reflector |
Equivalent new generation halogen bulb with reflector or 'warm white' 2700K CFL bulb |
Check the physical dimensions of the fixture; whether the CFL can fit inside the fitting; and that light can escape |

Incandescent reflector light bulb with reflector |
Choose appropriate energy efficient reflector lamp: R63, R80, PAR 20, PAR30 or PAR 38. Both new generation halogen and CFL equivalents are available. |
R lamps are well suited to producing general volumes of light; PAR lamps produce a more spotty effect as the beam is more precise |
