Advances in halogen technology mean higher efficiency bulbs are now available for many existing and new fittings. As a direct replacement for specialty halogen bulbs efficient halogens look and function the same way as standard halogens but use up to 20% less electricity and last longer.
Halogen lamps are a type of incandescent. Although with halogens, the filament is run much hotter than a standard incandescent so they provide more light. This means halogen bulbs get very hot.
Where colour rendition is critical, the higher temperature means the light is less yellow – and more 'white' and therefore halogen bulbs often give better results since they produce light over the full colour range.
When replacing a halogen bulb match the size and base to the bulb you're replacing. Avoid touching the lamp glass surface with bare hands when installing it as oils from your fingers can cause hot-spots on the glass bulb that can reduce its lifespan.
So when replacing that blown halogen bulb in your outdoor floodlight or over your bathroom vanity, choose the most up-to-date and efficient option.
