Nowadays it is not a simple case of looking lightbulbs packaging to find out which lightbulb you need. It pays to think about with lightbulbs fit which existing light fittings, and how best to light your home or business.

It's also not as easy as only using one type of lighting and expecting it to do different things. Choosing the right lightbulb for each room and the right light fitting will allow you to save money, while maintaining or improving the quality of the light throughout your home or office.

Here are some examples of different types of lighting.

Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs)
CFLs use 80% less power than standard incandescent lightbulbs and now come in a range of colours, shapes and sizes. This makes them suitable replacements for many common lighting appliances.

Halogen Spot Lights
Often used as recessed downlights, halogen spotlight lightbulbs are more efficient than standard incandescent lightbulbs. Plus, the new infra red coated models can provide even greater savings. Similar in colour to standard incandescent lightbulbs, these are popular for accent, task and display lighting.

New Generation Halogen Globes
A direct replacement for standard incandescent lightbulbs, new generation halogen lightbulbs look just the same but provide 30% lower running costs. These lightbulbs last twice as long and can be used with standard dimmers.

Standard Incandescent Lightbulbs
Incandescent lightbulbs have undergone few changes since the 19th century. They are gradually being replaced by newer technologies that use far less energy to emit the same level of visible light.
