RightLight.govt.nz is where you can find all the information you need to make informed choices about lighting at home, at work or on the road.
RightLight was originally developed by the Electricity Commission with support by the Energy Efficiency Conservation Authority (EECA), Consumer New Zealand, New Zealand Green Building Council, Lighting Council NZ (LCNZ) and the Electrical Contractors Association of New Zealand (ECANZ). Following the disestablishment of the Electricity Commission (October 2010), EECA now manages and maintains RightLight so consumers can interact with the tools avaliable and evaluate the cost and potential electricity savings of energy efficient lighting in their homes and businesses.
Accompanying the launch of RightLight.govt.nz was an advertising campaign to raise awareness of the website, and to encourage consumers to use the information that it provides. In addition RightLight includes a training programme to provide retail sales staff in electrical wholesalers, DIY stores and specialist lighting stores with information on energy efficient lighting that they can use to educate their customers.
What are the programme objectives?
The RightLight programme is projected to deliver an additional 100GWh of savings per annum from this information programme, achieveable after 3 years, based on a conservative additional conversion of 5% of inefficient lamps to more efficient alternatives for each year of the programme. The programme will produce savings at a cost of less than 1c per kW/h. When compared to a long run marginal cost of 8.5c for new generation there is a compelling case for the programme.
The Energy Efficiency & Conservation Authority (EECA) encourages, supports and promotes energy efficiency, energy conservation and the use of renewable energy sources. It is a Crown Entity established under The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act 2000.
EECA works with many partners to inspire energy efficiency and advance renewable energy. It has a strong working relationship with the various businesses, government, local government, communities and individuals and supports initiatives such as the RightLight programme that give New Zealanders the information, tools and support they need to make changes in their energy use.
Consumer NZ is a research and testing organisation that publishes the results of its work in Consumer magazine and online at consumer.org.nz. It has been providing trusted, independent and accurate advice to New Zealand consumers giving them the knowledge to make reasoned decisions for almost 50 years. Its research and testing results are available to Consumer magazine and consumer.org.nz subscribers, and to consumers who purchase a magazine on the newsstand or purchase an individual report from consumer.org.nz.
Consumer NZ has provided the core energy efficient lighting information for rightlight.govt.nz. They have also conducted product tests on CFL, and energy efficient halogen lamps which was published in Consumer Magazine, on consumer.org.nz and on this website. A product test on downlights is due to be published in August 2009.
The New Zealand Green Building Council was formed in 2005, with a view to reducing the environmental impact of commercial buildings, and creating more efficient, more flexible, healthier buildings. To be effective the initial focus has been on developing a Building Rating System, education, information and resources.

The Electrical Contractors Association of New Zealand is recognised as the major electrical contracting trade association in New Zealand. ECANZ actively participates with government, regulatory bodies, industry stakeholders and the public over a wide range of issues on behalf of its members.
As well as running the Eco-Smart Electrician training programme for its members, ECANZ supports the Energy Efficiency Conservation Authority initiatives that promote greater education and efficient use of energy in New Zealand. As a key influence in many lighting decisions, ECANZ member’s involvement in RightLight has widespread and lasting benefits to lighting users in homes and businesses.

Local Government New Zealand represents the national interests of councils of New Zealand and, as the champion of best practice in the local government sector, provides policy, advice and training to councils. With over 330,000 road lights throughout New Zealand – each operating for an average of 4000 hours per year – the cost to councils and ratepayers of powering and maintaining road lighting networks is significant. Efficiencies of up to 40% are now available in some lighting networks due to technological advancements and, to ensure councils are able to make informed decisions on the best road lighting solution for their networks, Local Government New Zealand has ensured the resources developed as part of the RightLight road lighting programme are practical, relevant and fit for purpose.
